MICROPLASTICS – TINY POLLUTANTS POSING BIG PROBLEMS

Image
What are micro plastics?  Microplastics are defined as being ‘extremely small pieces of plastic debris in the environment resulting from the disposal and breakdown of consumer products and industrial waste.’ They are generally less than 5 millimeters in length.  Size of the problem  Look around you. Plastic is everywhere. Everywhere. Plastic production has risen from 2 billion tons (1950) to 8.3 billion tons (2017) and is estimated to be as high as 34 billion tons by 2050. The global plastic waste volume, which was 6.3 billion tonnes in 2015, is now estimated to be 12 billion tons in 2050.  Plastic that has been released into the environment persists for many years, before disintegrating into microplastics through natural degradation.  Composition  According to a research paper and study on the chemical composition of microplastics floating on the surface of water, microplastics were found to be made of some dominant polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and th

OCEANS MATTER

COVID-19 pandemic was a wakeup call and we realised that one of the major factors could be the abuse of nature. Climate change, Air and water pollution and loss of biodiversity. Our Earth is also known as “the blue planet” because of the vast oceans which are home to many plants and animals. Of late there has been a growing concern regarding water pollution and oceans aren’t untouched. There are many ways in which we can save the oceans. The reason I am motivated to save them is that they are the planets ecosystems and are vital to sustain life on Earth. Overfishing, pollution, and other human activities have put oceans at risk. Why should we protect the ocean? They generate almost half of the oxygen that we breathe. It is formed by tiny marine plants called Phytoplankton. They also hold 97% of the total water found on the Earth, which is necessary for both Mammals and Fish. One fifth of the animal protein people eat are found in oceans, also an ecosystem in which many medicinal and Ay

SALINITY IN OCEANS

Image
Salinity affects production in crops , it interferes with the nitrogen uptake. Some ions also hamper plant growth.  Salinity of water is one of our major concerns because fish can sustain only a particular salinity in water. Increase in salinity kills planktons which are the major source of food . Together planktons form the base of marine food web. Due to this , increase in salinity of ocean water can disrupt the entire marine ecosystem. Pisiculture and fisheries are responsible for embryogenesis , bladder inflation , and incubation . Thus we see that salinity is one of the factors which will affect the Earth along with temperature.  It is crucial and necessary to focus on them.  - Iraj Shah, Std.8

INTRODUCTION

Image
H YDROSPHERE – One of the 3 most important spheres of earth that supports life.  Water is an everyday necessity. The entire earth lies on the base of a simple compound H 2 O. And its largest source is the oceans. You might think that oceans contain salt water which is unfit for domestic use but it plays a vital role in our life. It brings moisture to land, equable climate, tourism, recreation, medicine and food. Moreover, a different variety of life is enveloped underneath the waters which are an essential aspect in the food chain. Oceans balance atmospheric composition and stabilize the global temperatures. Today, we are misusing them for our greed. Our activities have caused depletion of ocean-health, its resources and diversity. It is time now that we get together to save our oceans. Let’s get ready to embark on this journey with TEAM VARUNA!! -         ABOUT US --TEAM VARUNA (Virtuous Aid and Rehabilitation of the Underwater by Negation of (plastic) Adulteration) We are a team o
